Meet the Columnist

Columnist, Sheila Moss, is humor writer from  Tennessee. She writes  a weekly human interest column about daily life and the funny things that happen to everyone.

   She has written for  the Daily News of Kingsport,   Griffin Journal, Oakridge Now, Atlanta Woman Magazine, Aberdeen Examiner, Angleton Advocate,  and Smyrna AM, a supplement of the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal. She has been published by Voyageur Press, McGraw Hill, and the good folks at Guidepost Books.  Her articles have appeared in numerous anthologies and other publications, both in print and online.

    She is a former board member and past  Editor of  the, website of  the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, the oldest and largest professional organization for columnists. Selling Naming Rights....

Selling Naming Rights

Did you know that the Tennessee Titansí stadium, used to be the Adelphia Coliseum. It seems that Adelphia Business Solutions, Inc. bought the rights to name it, but fell on hard times financially and failed to meet their obligation. Anxious to get the dirty business over and find a new sponsor before football season, the Titans went to court. They wanted to resell the *naming rights* to another bidder, hopefully one with enough money to pay them.

That sounds like a pretty good idea to me - selling *naming rights*. Maybe I could sell the *naming rights* to my website and make a few bucks myself? Now granted my website doesnít have quite the amount of public attention that the Titans stadium gets, but you wouldnít have to come up with the quite the amount of money either. Adelphia had agreed to fork over a cool 30 million clams for *naming rights.* Iím willing to settle for a mere fraction of that amount.

Think of it, following the example of shamelessly blazing your name across a stadium, you could have your name blatantly blazed across my website. Okay, it already has a name -- but that hasnít stopped the Titans from reselling rights, so why should it stop me? You wouldnít have to write the columns, I'll do that. If you donít like a column, well, I guess that is just too bad. After all, what you are paying for is the *naming rights.* Not every game (or column) can be a winner, you know.

The namer doesnít own the stadium, obviously. If they did, they wouldnít have had problems with Federal Bankruptcy Court. They didn't own the football team either. The namer isnít guaranteed a winning team to glorify their name. All they get is the rights to name the stadium and put their name all over the drink cups. Obviously, I donít have any refreshments for you to put your name on. I suppose we could go into mousepads or coffee cups like other sites have done. You get to put your name on them, and I get all the money from sales. Sounds like a good deal to me!

Now there has been a lot of grumbling from the local taxpayers about the whole deal with the stadium. They city GAVE the *naming rights* to Bud Adams as an incentive to get a NFL team to town -- then he turned around and sold them. Taxes helped finance the building of the stadium. Many have suggested that the stadium should be named "Taxpayers Stadium". But, taxpayers are always grumbling about something. 

If you bought the *naming rights* to my website, you would not have to worry about taxpayers; however, there are always the critics and detractors. Guess no deal is perfect.

I wouldnít sell my website *naming rights* to just anyone. It would have to be someone with a lot of money. Iíve learned a few things from Bud Adams. It would also have to be named something decent, no porn or adult stuff. Thereís enough of that on the net already. Guess it could be commercial, like the stadiumís name. Some believe the naming rights for the stadium should be purchased locally, and the stadium renamed "Grand Ole Coliseum" or "Dude, Get a Dell!"

Well, I doubt if Iím going to get many offers to buy *naming rights* to my website. All I ever get in the way of sponsorship offers are big gaudy popup window for a gambling sites. They might get rich at a penny a click, but I sure wonít! No, I want BIG BUCKS, or Iím not selling my *naming rights* so break out the checkbook and show me the color green. No outrageously extravagant offer or rich corporation will be refused.

Of course, if you really have a ton of money, you might just want to bid on a stadium's *naming rights* instead.
